ORIF

Open reduction internal fixation is a surgery performed to stabilize and heal a broken thigh bone(femur). There are certain medical conditions like cancer or motor vehicle accident, sports injury gunshot injuries, or fall that can fracture the femur. The procedure is performed to repair fractures that will not be able to heal correctly with casting or splinting.

This technique is done under general anesthesia, and it takes a few hours to complete the surgery. During the operation, an incision is made at the site of the break or injury, and the fracture is re-aligned, or there is the replacement of the joint. After which the hardware is attached, and the joint is closed with the help of staples or stitches. Hardware used includes steel rods, screws, or plates and they can be permanent, or temporary and can be removed once the healing is complete.

After the procedure, the patient must stay in the hospital for 1–10 days, the length of stay depends on the surgery. It takes approximately 4–6 months to have a complete recovery.
